Family doctors provide care for the whole person, including issues unrelated to pregnancy. They have training in maternity and newborn care, as well as most other areas of medicine. Our family physicians at Brampton’s Primary Care Group provide prenatal and postpartum care for mom and baby as long as they are needed, including help with breastfeeding, nutrition, quitting smoking and help with mental health concerns or medical concerns for the newborn. Family doctors who provide maternity care may take you on as a long-term patient in their practice, or they will help you find a family doctor for ongoing care after the postpartum period.
What Happens During Prenatal Visits?
After you find out you are pregnant, you should make an appointment with your doctor.On your first visit, your family physician Brampton will start by taking a record of your medical history and how you’ve been feeling. You’ll be weighed and have your blood pressure taken at every visit. On your first visit you’ll also probably have a pelvic exam to check the size and shape of your uterus (womb), and if needed, a Pap smear to check for signs of cancer of the cervix (the opening of the uterus) and cultures to check for infections. Urine and blood tests may be done on the first visit and again later in your pregnancy.

One of our family physician team members is available to you 24h/day and 7days/week at the Labour and Delivery unit at Brampton Civic Hospital.
Eligibility for Care
We specialize in low-risk obstetrics. Our team cares for most patients who are referred to us, however, some may not be suitable for primary care obstetrical care and will be referred to one of our obstetrician colleagues. We only provide care to women who will deliver at Brampton Civic Hospital and do not provide care to women who wish to have a home birth. Additionally, our group is comprised of both female and male physicians and we cannot guarantee the gender of the physician at the time of delivery.Women who meet the following criteria should be referred directly to an Obstetrician:
